<p>The Old Webster Meeting House is an historic meeting house on Battle Street in Webster, New Hampshire. Built in 1791, and altered in the 1840s, the meeting house is one of a small number of meeting houses to survive in northern New England. The building was moved from its original site in 1942 to make way for a flood control project and was given modern footings for the granite foundation in 1979. The building, owned by the Society for the Preservation of the Old Meeting House, now serves as a local museum.</p><br>
<p>The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1985.</p><br>
<h2>History</h2><br>
<p>The Old Webster Meeting House was originally named the Westerly Meeting House. This building in Webster, New Hampshire, is one of a small group of eighteenth century meeting houses in northern New England that essentially retain their original form. Despite some alterations, the building remains the only well-preserved example of its type in the upper Merrimack Valley of New Hampshire. Built by local craftsmen according to a regional architectural tradition, the building was altered in the nineteenth century in keeping with new local traditions. Today it is a museum which preserves a record of the evolution of meeting house architecture in central New Hampshire.</p><br>
<p>The Westerly Meeting House is the only such structure remaining in the upper Merrimack Valley of New Hampshire which essentially retains its original exterior appearance as well as many of its original interior features. While the building was once one of a large group of comparable structures built in the region through the eighteenth century, all of its prototypes and contemporaries have been destroyed or so remodeled as to be no longer recognizable. The companion meeting house built in the eastern part of Boscawen in 1769, for example, was burned in 1798. The structure that replaced this eastern meeting house, constructed in 1799, was remodeled to the form of a typical Greek Revival church in 1839, with additional remodelings at later dates. Another meeting house in nearby Pembroke was converted to a barn and so remains today. That on Searles Hill in neighboring Salisbury, six miles distant, was built in 1768 and dismantled about 1790. Another at Canterbury, adjoining Boscawen on the east, was converted to a dwelling.</p><br>
<p>The Westerly Meeting House was constructed in 1791 after the inhabitants of the westerly part of the town of Boscawen, N.H., complaining that many of them had to travel five miles or more to the town&#39;s only meeting house, petitioned to be set off as a separate township. Although this division did not take place until many years later (creating the present town of Webster), the inhabitants of Boscawen voted in 1791 to erect a second meeting house for the convenience of the inhabitants in the westerly part of the township.</p><br>
<p>In so doing, the people of Boscawen followed local architectural tradition, making the new building a virtual twin of the earlier Boscawen meeting house, built in the easterly part of the township in 1769. The building was also part of a larger regional tradition. It was one of some seventy known examples of meeting houses built between 1772 and 1804 that had end "porches” or stair-towers providing access to the galleries. By far the greater number of these twin-porch meeting houses were in southern New Hampshire, where they constituted a dominant architectural tradition. The Westerly Meeting House was built by native joiner and carpenter Samuel Jackman (1749–1845), who would have been familiar with both the regional tradition and the specific prototype in the eastern part of Boscawen.</p><br>
<h2>Raising the Meeting-House</h2><br>
<p>The raising of a meeting-house was a great event, and people came from the surrounding towns to aid in the work. They came early in the morning, with pike-poles and pitch-forks and iron bars,—pike-poles and pitch-forks to lift with when the “broadside “should be well up in the air, and iron bars to hold against the foot of the posts to slide them into the mortises of the sills. On such an occasion there was plenty of rum. The first thing to be done was to take a drink, to give strength for the labor of the day. Then came the bringing together of the timbers. The sills were already laid and levelled. First the posts, then the girts and levers, and lastly the plates.</p><br>
<p>It had been framed by the “scribe” rule—each piece being fitted to its place. The "square” rule was then unknown to country carpenters. The broadside was then pinned together. Then came the drinking of more rum, and the marshaling of the crowd,— the cool-headed men hold of the iron bars, the strong and experienced men in places of responsibilities. When all were ready, the master workman, standing in rear where he could see all that was going on, commanded silence.</p><br>
<p>We hear him say,— "Are you ready all ?“</p><br>
<p>"Aye! aye!”</p><br>
<p>"Take hold all!”</p><br>
<p>The men bend, and place their shoulders beneath the posts. A swarm take hold of the plate, another hold of the girts. The men at the iron bars spit on their hands:</p><br>
<p>“Now, then!”</p><br>
<p>The frame rises.</p><br>
<p>"Heave away, my hearties!”</p><br>
<p>It is up to their shoulders.</p><br>
<p>"Now she rises!"</p><br>
<p>Those by the plates seize their pike-poles and pitch-forks. At each corner and in the middle are “shores,”with a crowd of men and boys lifting on each.</p><br>
<p>“Heigh O! my hearties !”</p><br>
<p>They lift with all their might, and grow red in the face. The pike-poles bend, the handles of the pitch-forks are ready to snap.</p><br>
<p>“Steady there!”</p><br>
<p>Now comes the tug of war at the foot of the posts. The iron-bar men are bracing with all their might.</p><br>
<p>“Heave-ho!” from the master.</p><br>
<p>“Now she goes!” from the men.</p><br>
<p>Higher, still higher, up to the perpendicular. The tenons slide into the mortises in the sills, the “shore” men hold back on the poles, and the first broadside of the house of God stands in its appointed place. The men wipe their brows, and take another drink of rum. There is a congratulatory dram all around, in preparation for the opposite broadside. That, too, rises. Then come the connecting girts and plates, and then the lifting of the beams for the galleries, and the high beams, the putting up of sleepers, planks and boards, rafters and purlins, and, last of all, the ridgepole. When the last is in its place, a crowd of men sit astride it, take full drams from the bottles of rum passed up to them, and then dash the bottles to the ground. This last is the dedicatory dram.</p><br>
<p>Such the scene on that day. So complete were the arrangements, so excellent the workmanship of Samuel Jackman, so numerous the men, so early at work in the morning were they, that the first broadside was up before nine o&#39;clock, the last dram drank before noon, and the raising was over.</p><br>
<p>Thomas Coffin, a boy of fourteen at the time, remembers the occasion as one of the great events of his boyhood.</p><br>
<p>The amount of rum drank at the raising is seen from the selectmen&#39;s book: “Paid for rum to raise the New Meeting House £3—17—2"—nearly $20.</p><br>
<p>In the evening, after the frame of the meeting-house was raised, the young men repaired to the house now owned by Henry L, Dodge, where the girls, who had been lookers-on at the raising, were assembled. The town had provided a generous supply of food and liquors, and all hands after supper joined in a grand dance, which was kept up till past midnight.</p><br>
<p>The pews were set up, and sold, and the proceeds applied to finishing the house.</p><br>
<h2>Description</h2><br>
<p>The Webster meeting house is a rectangular framed building of two stories with clapboarded walls, a wood-shingled gable roof, and a foundation of original split granite slabs supported on modern (1979) concrete walls. The building retains its basic configuration, but has been remodeled several times to accommodate changing uses. Alterations include the removal of two end "porches" (stairway enclosures); the substitution of interior stairways for these projecting stairs; the flooring over of the auditorium at the gallery level to provide a full second floor; and the removal of pulpit and pews on the first floor. The building was also removed from its original location half a mile away in 1941-2 when the original site was cleared for a flood control project, and in 1979 was provided with a stable foundation of concrete below grade to ensure its permanent stability. Despite these alterations, the structure retains a sufficient number of original or early features to render it an important example of meeting house architecture in the upper Merrimack River Valley region of New Hampshire.</p><br>
<p>The facade of the meeting house faces west and is seven bays wide. Window sashes are 16-over-12, with muntin profiles typical of the Federal period. Exterior window casings are elaborated with flat fillets in place of backhand moldings. The front doorway, in the center of the facade, is a simple Greek Revival design which undoubtedly dates from 1844, when the structure was altered from its original use as a meeting house to a dual use as a town hall on the first floor and a chapel on the second. This doorway encloses two doors, each having five flat panels surrounded by applied Grecian ogee moldings. Above the doors is a five-light transom sash with thin muntins characteristic of the Greek Revival period. The door casings are wide flat boards with flat strips applied to their inner and outer edges and with flat square corner blocks at the juncture of side and top casings. The water table and corner boards of the building are simple square-edged planks. The front cornice of the meeting house consists of an ovolo bed molding and an ogee crown molding.</p><br>
<p>The side (north and south) elevations are identical to one another. Both are five bays wide, with window sashes and casings matching those of the facade. The attic of the building is lighted by single 12-over-12 windows in each gable. The end doorways- of the building each have five-panel doors with flat panels surrounded by Grecian ogee moldings. The casings are identical to those of the front doorway. The side doorways have no transom sashes. The raking eaves of the roof are trimmed with tapered boards.</p><br>
<p>The rear (east) elevation is five bays wide, with window sashes and trim matching those features on the other elevations. At the center of this elevation is a window, elevated above the other four windows of the first floor but otherwise identical to them; this lights a moderator&#39;s desk in the center of the rear wall of the first floor. The cornice of the rear of the building is a box cornice with fascia and plancia boards but with no applied moldings.</p><br>
<p>The interior of the building is divided, into two stories. The first floor is a single large room, now used to display artifacts which illustrate the history of the town of Webster. The room is entered through a vestibule inside the front door, from which two flights of stairs rise to the second floor. Opposite the door is a raised desk of unpainted pine, with paneled ends which enclose a box pew that served as a moderator&#39;s podium for town meetings. Around the perimeter of the original gallery location, turned pine posts in the form of Tuscan columns with low pedestals and square architrave blocks rise to support the gallery flooring. The ceilings beneath the galleries reflect the pitched flooring of the latter, rising from the gallery columns to the outer walls of the building. These ceilings, like the walls of the first floor, are plastered; the heavy oak posts of the frame project forward beyond the planes of the walls. The central portion of the ceiling of the first floor is un-plastered. This was originally an open area within the perimeter of the gallery, and is framed with heavy bridging joists which support a series of closely spaced floor joists of square section. The first floor, originally the main floor of the meeting house auditorium and after 1844 the Webster town hall, is today filled with museum displays.</p><br>
<p>The second floor of the building as a single large room with a level central floor in the area within the original perimeter of the gallery. The floor slants upward on the front and sides of the room, where the original gallery construction is retained. The gallery floor is filled with a series of "slip" pews, which face the center of the rear of the building where the original pulpit was located in a position midway between the first floor level and the gallery level. An analogous position on the second floor is now occupied by a movable reading desk in the Empire style, undoubtedly installed when the second floor was finished as a chapel in 1844.</p><br>
<p>The second floor is reached by two enclosed flights of stairs which rise from each side of the vestibule at the front door of the building. The two stairwells are guarded by simple balustrades with square balusters on the second floor. The detailing at this level is simple: window casings are square-edged, and the uncased posts have chamfered edges to a point within a few inches of the ceiling. Walls and ceiling are plastered, and the juncture between the two is finished in a small plastered cove.</p><br>
<p>The frame of the building is composed largely of oak. The roof frame consists of six sets of rafters. The four interior trusses are composed of doubled rafters, rafter ties, and king posts. The king posts are braced longitudinally through the building by horizontal beams linking them at mid-height, and by diagonal braces which extend from points near the tops and bottoms of the king posts to the midpoints of the horizontal beams.</p><br>
<h2>Original Appearance</h2><br>
<p>The basic structure has not been altered. As originally constructed, the meeting house had an open-centered gallery at the present second floor level, and a tall pulpit of typical eighteenth-century design on the east wall. Before alterations of 1844, the gallery was reached by flights of stairs enclosed in projecting "porches" features which were shared by the majority of meeting houses in central New Hampshire. The main floor of the building originally held thirty-four pews, and the gallery had twenty-three.</p><br>
<p>Although the Westerly Meeting House lost some original features in its remodeling in 1844, it is the only such structure in central New Hampshire that retains the essential form of the typical eighteenth-century meeting house of the region. The only comparable examples of early meeting house architecture in New Hampshire are a group of three steeple-less structures that survive in the southeastern towns of Danville, Fremont, and Sandown, some 45 miles from Webster. Together, these four structures preserve the only remaining record of typical eighteenth-century meeting house architecture in New Hampshire.</p><br>
<p>In 1823 a dispute over the proprietorship and use of the meeting house arose between the Congregational Church, which had been its sole religious occupant since its construction, and the relatively new Christian Union Society. The eventual outcome was the withdrawal of the Congregationalists, who built the nearby Webster Congregational Church for their own exclusive use. Eventually, in 1844, the Christian Union Society and the town voted to cooperate in remodeling the building, removing the projecting stair enclosures, flooring over the gallery, and adapting the interior for a chapel on the second floor and a town hall on the first. This was in keeping with a movement at the period for towns to abandon or remodel the uncomfortable and drafty old meeting houses and to provide smaller but more convenient halls for the use of town meetings. Thus, the Westerly Meeting House evolved to meet changing religious and civil needs in the area it served.</p><br>
<h2>Effects of Moving the Building</h2><br>
<p>The Westerly Meeting House was moved from its original site (about half a mile southwest of its present location) in the fall of 1941. Its original site fell within the limits of a flood control project being developed by the United States Army Corps of Engineers. The building was condemned, the town of Webster was reimbursed $10,000 for its loss, and the structure was slated to be demolished. In October, 1941, an association was formed for the purpose of purchasing the building as surplus property, relocating it to a site above the limits of the flood control project, and preserving the structure for the future. This organization was incorporated as The Society for the Preservation of the Old Meeting House in Webster, New Hampshire; it remains the owner of the structure.</p><br>
<p>The Society employed the Walter Hill Company of Tilton, N.H., long regarded as the most skillful building movers in New Hampshire to move the building to its present site. This was accomplished in the spring of 1942 with no damage to the structure. The effect of the move on the old site was great but inevitable inasmuch as all structures within the flood control district were required to be removed or demolished. The effect of the move on the new site was to add a building of a public nature to a neighborhood which already combined domestic structures, a store, a relocated burying ground, and a church. The addition of the meeting house to this group reinforced an already strong sense of the neighborhood as the town center, and added an attractively maintained structure to a group that, already typified the New Hampshire village. The effect of the move on the building was minimal due to the care of the movers. The principal impact of the move upon the structure was to alter its compass orientation, placing the front door to the west instead of to the south as formerly. In subsequent years, the effect upon the building of ownership by the Society has been to enhance the care of the structure to a level beyond that traditionally maintained by the former owner, the Town of Webster.</p><br>
<h2>Other Structures on the Site</h2><br>
<p>On the same parcel of land is also an open-sided reproduction of a typical horse shed of the type often associated with meeting houses. This was built in 1972 and extended in 1979.</p><br>
<p>Standing behind (to the east of) the meeting house, the horse shed is one hundred feet in length. It is built of modern materials in a form that suggests the sheds that stood behind the meeting house in its original location. The building consists of ten ten-foot bays; the southern seven bays were, constructed in 1972 and the northern three bays in 1979. The building has a braced frame of heavy sawn timbers, clad in wide vertical pine boards. The roof frame consists of rafters of two-inch stock, placed twenty-four inches on centers. The structure is sixteen feet in depth and has a wood-shingled gable roof. The three northernmost ten-foot bays are enclosed to accommodate a fire truck given for display purposes to the Society for the Preservation of the Old Meeting House. The middle five sections are un-floored and have open fronts (west elevations) to suggest traditional horse sheds. These bays presently house a display of various pieces of horse-drawn equipment. The two southernmost bays are enclosed to form a secure storage shed.</p><br>
<p>The lot upon which the meeting house stands is bordered on the west by Battle Street. The land slopes upward in a gentle ascending grade to the point, east of the meeting house, where the horse sheds stand. Here is a low but abrupt rise along which the sheds extend. The meeting house lot is generally clear of trees, and is separated from adjoining properties only by metes and bounds rather than by stone walls or other barriers. A gravel driveway extends from Battle Street to a point near the southerly door of the meeting house, and from there to the horse sheds behind.</p><br>
<p>The Roslindale Substation is a historic electrical substation building at 4228 Washington Street in the center of the Roslindale village of Boston, Massachusetts. The brick Classical Revival building was constructed in 1911 by the Boston Elevated Railway , a predecessor to today&#39;s MBTA. The monumental building is 80 ft long, 50 ft wide, and 46 ft high. The building was designed by Robert S. Peabody of Peabody and Stearns, and built by Stone & Webster. The building was use by the Boston Elevated and its successors to provide AC to DC conversion for street cars until 1971. It is one of four  substations built by the BERy to survive. The building was vacant from 1971 until January 14, 2017 when a craft-beer store opened in the basement, with a restaurant planned to open in the main space shortly thereafter.</p><br>
<p>The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2013.</p><br>
<p>The Deery Inn, also known as "The Old Tavern" or "The Mansion House and Store," is a historic building on Main Street in Blountville, Tennessee. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is considered the "centerpiece" of the Blountville local historic district.</p><br>
<p>Deery Inn is a two-story Federal-style building with 19 rooms. The original building was a log structure, built in the 1780s or 1790s, William Deery, an Irishman from Ulster, acquired the property in 1801. He expanded the building to include a general store and tavern, with hotel rooms on the second story.</p><br>
<p>The building&#39;s 19 rooms include a large entrance hall, a gathering room, a dining room, a library, two kitchens, three bathrooms, two attics, a cellar, four bedrooms for the family, and three sleeping rooms for travelers. There are two chimneys. The front of the building has three entrance doors and 13 windows whose glass panes are arranged in a nine-over-six configuration.</p><br>
<p>Deery prospered as a businessman. In addition to the inn, he owned and operated stores in several East Tennessee communities, a stagecoach line that had eight stagecoaches and 53 teams of horses as of 1821, and a steamboat service between Knoxville and Chattanooga. He died in 1845. Notable people who are recorded as having stayed at the inn in its early history include Andrew Jackson, James K. Polk, Andrew Johnson, the Marquis de LaFayette (on his USA travels in 1824–25), and Louis Phillipe Orleans, King of France.</p><br>
<p>During the Civil War Gideon and Mary Cox Cates leased the property and operated the inn under the name Cates&#39; Hotel. Several surrounding buildings, including the Sullivan County courthouse, were destroyed by fire during the Battle of Blountville, but the inn survived because Cates had used bribery to get the Union and Confederate commanders to spare his inn.</p><br>
<p>Gideon and Mary Cates purchased the property after the Civil War, and owned it until the 1880s. In 1887, the inn was sold to Amanda Pearson, whose family was to own it until 1940. The property was operated as an inn until 1930. At some time during the Pearson family ownership, the inn building housed a post office.</p><br>
<p>Virginia Byars Caldwell bought the inn in 1940. She undertook to restore the property to its early 19th-century appearance. She also moved several old log structures onto the back of the property, including a smokehouse, the offices of the King Ironworks, a spring house, and an early law office.</p><br>
<p>The Old Deery Inn is now owned by the government of Sullivan County. A substantial restoration project was undertaken in 2007. The inn is managed by the Sullivan County Historical Preservation Association and is open for group tours.</p><br>
<p>Walton and Roslin Halls is a mixed-used commercial and residential building that was built in two parts. They are located at the corner of Washington and Walton Streets in the Dorchester neighborhood of Boston, Massachusetts, and extend south along Washington Street. The first of the two buildings, that at 3-5 Walton Street and 702-708 Washington, is a three-story brick and wood frame structure built in 1897 to a design by Cornelius A. Russell; the southern portion was completed a year later. The building housed a commercial space on the ground floor, and residential units above.</p><br>
<p>The building, which was one of the first of its type built south of Codman Square, was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2013.</p><br>
<p>Caparangasan is an island barangay located in Samar province of the Philippines.</p><br>
<h2>Geography and climate</h2><br>
<p>Caparangasan is situated in the central western and also coastal part of the island of Samar within the Philippine Sea and archipelago. It is bordered by Lungib to the south, Napalisan to the west, Sondara Island to the north, and Malayog to the east.</p><br>
<p>It has a total area of approximately 3.5 km&sup2; of flat coastal plain terrain with an elevation ranging from 0 to 4 m above the sea level. It experiences a variety of wind types: the Amihan, from northeast, the Timog, from south, the Habagat, from southwest, the Canaway, from northwest, the Cabunghan from east, the Dumagsa, from southeast, and the Salatan from the west. It has distributed rainfall throughout the year, except during the summer months, from February through May, when it is dry.</p><br>
<p>The Pembroke Mill is a historic mill building at 100 Main Street in Pembroke, New Hampshire, on the north bank of the Suncook River. The four-story brick Renaissance Revival building was constructed in 1860, and was the first building of the Suncook Manufacturing Company, which became a major employer in Pembroke and was responsible for the development of the Suncook village where the mill is located. The most prominent feature of the building is its tower, a five-story campanile with narrow arched windows and wider arched doors on the lower levels, above which is an elaborate corbel table and a slate skirt. These are topped by the fifth level, which has single arched windows on each face, above which are a series of recessed arches in a flared corbelling that support the pyramidal slate roof.</p><br>
<p>The mill building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1985.</p><br>
<p>The Franklin Pierce House was a historic house at 52 South Main Street in Concord, New Hampshire, United States. The three story stuccoed brick building was constructed in 1852, and was originally built with Italianate styling and a flat roof. It was restyled later in the 19th century in the Second Empire style, with a mansard roof. The house was most notable, however, for its association with United States President Franklin Pierce, who lived here with his family  intermittently after his departure from the White House. Writer Nathaniel Hawthorne visited the Pierces here in 1864, shortly before his death, and both Pierce and his wife Jane died in this house.</p><br>
<p>The house was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1979. It was destroyed by fire in 1981.</p><br>
<p>The former Maine Central Railroad General Office Building is an historic office building at 222-224 Saint John Street in the Saint John Valley neighborhood of Portland, Maine. Built in stages between 1889 and 1916, it was home to the Maine Central Railroad Company, the states largest railroad operator. It is also one of the citys largest office buildings, and a fine example of Romanesque Revival architecture. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1988.</p><br>
<h2>Description and history</h2><br>
<p>The former Maine Central Railroad General Office Building is located on the west side of the Portland peninsula, below the Western Promenade between Saint John Street to the east and the railroad tracks to the west. It was located adjacent to Portland&#39;s Union Station, which was demolished in 1961. The office building is a large E-shaped three story masonry building, presenting the legs of the E toward Saint John Street and its spine to the railroad tracks. Due to the sloping lot, the track side of the building presents four stories. The street-facing front ends of the building are essentially the same, each with round-arched entrances at the center, flanked by projecting round bays that are two stories in height. A modillioned granite belt course separates the second and third floors, with the third floor having eight sash windows grouped 3-2-3. The building is capped by a hip roof, with dormers at the ends of the E legs as well as along the street-facing sides of the connecting sections, which are seven bays in width.</p><br>
<p>The Maine Central Railroad Company was chartered in 1856 and began operations in 1862, combining the operations of several smaller railroads, Over the next half-century the company grew significantly, through expansion and acquisition. This building was its second headquarters. The oldest portion, the lower two stories of one of the Es legs, was built in 1889 to a design by the Boston architectural firm Bradlee, Winslow & Wetherill. The same firm had also recently designed Union Station, and was retained for each of the buildings enlargements. In 1892 it was extended to the rear, and in 1898 the third floor was added. In 1906 a connector and second leg were built, giving the building a U shape, and it achieved its present form in 1916 with the addition of the third leg.</p><br>
<p>The William H. McElwain School is a historic school building at 250 Main Street in Bridgewater, Massachusetts. The two story brick Classical Revival building was built in 1912 to a design by the architectural firm of Loring and Phipps. The school was named for William H. McElwain , the owner of one of the William H. McElwain Company, a shoe manufacturer who was one of the major employers in Bridgewater at the turn of the 20th century. The schools construction was approved by the town shortly before workers in the firms Bridgewater factory went on strike. Despite this, the town accepted land in donation from McElwain&#39;s family on which to build the school, and named it in his honor. It served as a public school until 1997, and has sat vacant since then. The school is believed to be the best-preserved school building in Massachusetts designed by Loring and Phipps.</p><br>
<p>The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2013.</p><br>
<p>Limestone Run  is a tributary of the West Branch Susquehanna River in Union County, Pennsylvania. It is 5.8 mi in length. The stream flows through East Buffalo Township, Buffalo Township, and Lewisburg. Ludwig Derr once constructed a mill on the stream. Limestone Run has one named tributary: Miller Run.</p><br>
<h2>Course</h2><br>
<p>The headwaters of Limestone Run are underground. The stream begins on the western border of East Buffalo Township and the eastern border of Buffalo Township, near the community of Lochiel. The stream flows northeast for a short distance, crossing Pennsylvania Route 45, and then turns west, following Pennsylvania Route 45. After several miles, it turns briefly southeast and crosses Pennsylvania Route 45 before turning northeast and crossing the state route again. It then enters Lewisburg and turns southeast, crossing USA Route 15 and Pennsylvania Route 45. The stream enters the West Branch Susquehanna River in southeastern Lewisburg, near Bucknell University.</p><br>
<h3>Tributaries</h3><br>
<p>Limestone Run has six tributaries. Only one of them, Miller Run, is officially named.</p><br>
<h2>Hydrology</h2><br>
<p>The concentration of dissolved oxygen in the streams of the Limestone Run watershed ranges from 5.31 to 12.7 milligrams per liter. The pH ranges from 7.17 to 7.88. In 2003, the water temperature of Limestone Run and several of its tributaries was measured. The temperatures ranged from 15.49 &deg;C to 20.18 &deg;C. The alkalinity concentration in the Limestone Run watershed averages at 191 milligrams per liter.</p><br>
<p>The conductivity of Limestone Run and its tributaries ranges from 0.403 milli-siemens per centimeter on the tributary Miller Run to 0.598 milli-siemens per centimeter at a point on Limestone Run on Pennsylvania Route 45. The turbidity of the waters in the watershed, as measured in nephelometric turbidity units, ranges from 4.2 in the upper reaches of Limestone Run and 6.2 on a tributary in the middle reaches of the watershed to 12.6 in Lewisburg to 25.3 in the middle reaches of Limestone Run.</p><br>
<p>The concentration of total dissolved solids in the watershed of Limestone Run is approximately 0.289 to 0.29 milligrams per liter near its headwaters. In the middle reaches of the stream, the total dissolved solid concentration is approximately 0.38 to 0.388 milligrams per liter. Slightly upstream of Lewisburg, the concentration is about 0.37 or 0.38 milligrams per liter. The concentration of total dissolved solids in Lewisburg is also 0.37 or 0.38 milligrams per liter. Near the mouth, the concentration is 0.364 milligrams per liter. The total dissolved solids concentration on Limestone Run&#39;s tributaries ranges from 0.262 to 0.378 milligrams per liter.</p><br>
<p>The concentration of nitrates near the source of Limestone Run was 1.2 and 5.0 milligrams per liter on September 20 and October 18, 2003, respectively. In the middle of the stream, the concentration of nitrates was 6.2 and 7.6 milligrams per liter on those dates and was 4.4 and 5.4 milligrams per liter slightly upstream of Lewisburg. The nitrate concentration in Lewisburg was 3.9 on September 20 and 5.0 on October 18 and was 3.9 and 4.9 at the mouth on those dates, respectively. These nitrate concentrations are relatively high due to the fact that Limestone Run flows through large amounts of agricultural land.</p><br>
<p>There are no phosphates in the waters of Limestone Run and its tributaries, except for the headwaters, which had a phosphate concentration of 0.3 and 0.1 milligrams per liter on September 20, 2003 and October 18, 2003, respectively.</p><br>
<p>The concentration of chlorides in the waters of Limestone Run and its tributaries ranged from 8.2 to 21.5 milligrams per liter on September 20, 2003. The concentration was 8.2 milligrams per liter near the streams headwaters, 19.5 milligrams per liter in the middle reaches of the stream, 20.0 milligrams per liter slightly upstream of Lewisburg, 21.4 milligrams per liter in Lewisburg, and 21.5 milligrams per liter slightly upstream of the mouth. The chloride concentration on several of Limestone Runs tributaries ranged from 11.3 to 17.5 milligrams per liter.</p><br>
<p>The concentration of sulfates in the Limestone Run watershed ranged from 25.5 to 42.1 milligrams per liter on October 18, 2003. The concentration was 25.5 milligrams per liter near the headwaters, 37.7 milligrams per liter in the middle of the stream, 40.7 milligrams per liter just upstream of Lewisburg, 42.1 milligrams per liter in Lewisburg, and 41.8 milligrams per liter near the mouth. The concentration on the stream&#39;s tributaries ranged from 29.3 to 36.2 milligrams per liter.</p><br>
<p>The concentration of sodium in Limestone Run ranges from 3.47 milligrams per liter near the source to 7.93 milligrams per liter near the mouth. The magnesium concentration ranges from 19.2 milligrams per liter near the streams source to 26.5 milligrams per liter in the middle reaches of the stream. The minimum concentration of aluminum is 8 milligrams per liter upstream of Lewisburg and the maximum concentration is 15 milligrams per liter near the source. The potassium concentration ranges from 1.43 milligrams per liter upstream of Lewisburg to 2.5 milligrams per liter near the source. The concentration of calcium in the streams waters ranges from 48.40 to 69.90 milligrams per liter near the source and the mouth, respectively.</p><br>
<p>The concentration of manganese in Limestone Run ranges from 24.9 to 71.2 milligrams per liter at the stream&#39;s mouth and source, respectively. The iron concentration ranges from 103 to 135 milligrams per liter in the central reaches of the stream and near its source, respectively. The concentration of copper in the stream ranges from 0.4 to 1.6 milligrams per liter above Lewisburg and at the mouth, respectively. The zinc concentration ranges from 0.5 milligrams per liter in the middle reaches of the stream to 5.6 near the mouth. The concentration of cadmium in Limestone Run is so low as to be undetectable in some locations, but is as high as 0.06 milligrams per liter in Lewisburg. The lead concentration is so low as to be undetectable in some locations, but is as high as 0.04 milligrams per liter near the source.</p><br>
<p>Parts of Limestone Run are considered to be impaired by the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection.</p><br>
<h2>Geology</h2><br>
<p>Much of the southern part of the Limestone Run watershed is in the Wills Creek formation, which comes from the Silurian period and consists mainly of calcareous shale. The part of the watershed is composed of rocks from the Bloomsburg and Mifflintown formations, which mainly consist of shale. It is found in a small area in the southeastern part of the watershed. The Keyser and Tonoloway formations, which mainly consist of limestone and are from the Devonian and Silurian periods, are found in the northern, central, and extreme southern parts of the watershed.</p><br>
<p>The Buffalo Valley is in the Limestone Run watershed.</p><br>
<h2>Watershed</h2><br>
<p>Much of the western part of the Limestone Run watershed is agricultural land. Large portions of the central and southeastern reaches of the watershed are forested land. Most of the eastern part of the watershed is on a hard surface. The communities of Lewisburg and Linntown are both in the watershed.</p><br>
<p>Limestone Run drains about two thirds of the area of Lewisburg.</p><br>
<h2>History</h2><br>
<p>Limestone Run has been known in the past as Spring Run, Wilson Run, and Bull Run. Ludwig Derr built a mill on the stream in the 1700s. It was still standing in 1860.</p><br>
<p>Marcus Huling once gained a tract of land on Limestone Run. David Kenedy purchased 200 acres of land on Limestone Run in 1785.</p><br>
<p>In the early 1900s, some residents of Lewisburg discharged sewage into Limestone Run.</p><br>
<p>Limestone Run flooded five times between 1997 and 2012. In 2012, workers overseen by the Union County Conservation District did work to stabilize the banks of Limestone Run and altered the channel of the stream.</p><br>
<h2>Biology</h2><br>
<p>The concentration of E. coli in the waters of Limestone Run and its tributaries ranges from 90 to 1150 colonies per 100 milliliters. The areas with the highest concentration of E. coli also have high concentrations of algae.</p><br>
<p>Livestock have access to Limestone Run in its upper and middle reaches. Canada geese and wood ducks are found on the stream upstream of Lewisburg.</p><br>
<p>Aue Stagecoach Inn is a complex of three structures built by German immigrant Max Aue and is located on Boerne Stage Rd. and I-10, in Leon Springs, county of Bexar, in the USA state of Texas. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1979, and is an example of 19th century vernacular architecture of Texas.</p><br>
<h2>Saltbox house</h2><br>
<p>Max Aue was born in Anhalt-Köthen, Germany in 1826 and immigrated to Texas in 1852. He purchased a tract of land from John O. Meusebach, on which in 1855 he built a story saltbox limestone rubble house with exterior steps leading to a cellar. Inside the structure was a staircase leading to the upper loft that Aue used as his residence. The lower 2-room level functioned as a mercantile store. The house was a stop on the San Antonio-Boerne Stage Road. During the 1970s the saltbox house was given structural upgrades and expansions to convert it into a restaurant.</p><br>
<h2>Dog trot house</h2><br>
<p>When he married Emma Topperwin in February 1857, The dog trot house was added to the San Antonio project of the Historic American Buildings Survey in 1968. The survey noted that the 2-chimneyed dirt floor house measured 27 x, and that the diameters of the individual logs measured 5 -.</p><br>
<h2>Greek revival hotel</h2><br>
<p>A 2-story Greek Revival style structure was added to the complex in 1878, to function as a hotel for travelers along the stage route. In a reverse of how the original saltbox house functioned, the new 2-story house provided for family living quarters on the bottom floor. Guest quarters were on the second floor. The 2-story veranda was done in the Victorian style of architecture. When the San Antonio and Aransas Pass Railway connected San Antonio with a direct route to the Texas gulf coast in 1886, the railroad spur was 50 yd from the Aue Hotel. The dog trot cabin was later incorporated into the hotel on the ground level through the south rooms and an interconnected shed.</p><br>

<p>Harlan Hall is a historic opera house located at 603 Locust St. in Marshall, Illinois. The opera house opened in 1872 to provide a venue for theatrical performances in Marshall. The building has an Italianate design with tall, narrow windows, wide bracketed eaves, and a steeply sloping roof. Both local and traveling theatrical acts performed in the theater, which also hosted concerts, public meetings, and other events. The opera house had a livery stable on its first floor for its patrons&#39; horses, an unusual feature for contemporary theaters. In 1904, B. F. Johnson purchased the building and converted it to a movie theater; while it still served as a civic auditorium, the building no longer showed theatrical performances after this point. The building has since held a Moose Lodge, and its first floor has been converted to a commercial space.</p><br>
<p>The building was added to the National Register of Historic Places on November 29, 2001.</p><br>
<p>The Jay Lewis House is a historic house at 12 Fairview Drive in McGehee, Arkansas. The two story wood frame house was built in 1955 to a design by Edward Durell Stone, an Arkansas native and a leading proponent of Modern architecture. It is the only Stone-designed house in Desha County, and one of only five in the state. The exterior of the house is clad in vertical cypress boards, with a porch that wraps completely around the house, and a breezeway connecting to a carport, built at the same time. The porch roof is supported by six Douglas fir beams. The interior of the house is based on Stones Modernist reinterpretation of the traditional Arkansas dog trot form, with the central living/dining/kitchen area acting as the central element of that form. Other rooms of the house connect to this section, and are separated from it by Shōji screens. The houses basic design is similar to that of another house Stone designed in Englewood, New Jersey. The house is largely unchanged since its construction; one chimney has been replaced due to storm damage.</p><br>
<p>The house was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2005.</p><br>
<p>The McGehee National Guard Armory is a historic armory building at 1610 South First Street in McGehee, Arkansas. The armory, built in 1954, is a single story cinder block building faced in brick veneer. The metal gable roof is supported by a steel frame, with clerestory awning windows on either side. The large central area is surrounded on three sides by single story flat-roofed sections housing offices, kitchen space, and other support areas. The design of the building is typical of those produced by the Arkansas National Guard at that time. The building was used by the National Guard until 2005, and was given to the city the following year.</p><br>
<p>The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2006.</p><br>
<p>The Pineground Bridge, also known as the Depot Road Bridge or the Thunder Bridge, is a through-type lenticular truss bridge that formerly carried Depot Road over the Suncook River in Chichester, New Hampshire. The bridge was built in 1887 by the Berlin Iron Bridge Co., and is the only one of its type  in the state. It is 96 ft long and 16 ft wide, and rises 15 ft above the river. It is mounted on abutments made of unmortarted ashlar granite. The decking and rails are made of wood. The bridge has not undergone major alterations since its construction. Some of its stringers were replaced during the 1981-2 restoration, wooden parts were also replaced, and a number of decorative parts have been lost over the years.</p><br>
<p>The bridge was built on the site of earlier bridges that gave access to the "pine ground", an area with a large number of pine trees, and the eventual site of a saw mill. When the railroad arrived in the area in the late 1860s, Depot Road was run across the bridge to connect the town to the station. The previous bridge, in bad condition even before the arrival of the railroad, was probably subjected to heavier traffic afterward, and the town decided to replace it in 1887. The bridge was closed to vehicular traffic in 1978 and restored for pedestrian, bicycle, and snowmobile use in 1981-2.</p><br>
<p>The bridge was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2004.</p><br>
<p>The WPA Field House and Pump Station is a historic water works facility on Henry Bailey Turner Road in Scituate, Massachusetts. The field house at Bound Brook Park was built in 1938-9 with funding from the Works Progress Administration, and is a rare historical recreational building in the town. The building is 1.5 stories, 38 ft deep and 41 ft wide, and built of stone with a slate side-gable roof. Its front facade is sheltered by a porch that lies under the roof and is supported by stone piers; there is a center entry that is flanked on each side by a window. The building was used for storage  and for community group meetings, and was shuttered in 1981. In 2009 it was undergoing restoration.</p><br>
<p>The building and its grounds were listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2009.</p><br>
<p>The Gypsy  is a historic catboat whose home is in Wareham, Massachusetts. She was designed and built in 1900 by Bowdoin B. Crowninshield, as one of four identical sailing vessels, and was designated Crowninshield #149. Her design was influenced by the "Seawanhaka Rule", instituted at the Seawanhaka Corinthian Yacht Club to govern important characteristics of racing boats. She has a spoon bow, low freeboard, and long overhangs rising out of the water fore and aft. Her hull is made of white cedar on an oaken frame, although the top levels have been replaced with cypress.</p><br>
<p>The boat design was commissioned by Charles Henry Davis, who received the Hun, the first of the four boats built. The Witch was the second in the series, and was delivered to Osborne Howes II. (In-laws of Howes purchased the other two.) The Witch was first berthed at the summer house of the Howeses in Yarmouth, Massachusetts, which was called "The Witch House", and used by the family in informal races. She was sold by Howes in 1926, and came into the hands of Edward Barus, who sailed her in the Osterville area. After she was damaged in the New England Hurricane of 1938, she was rerigged from a gaff rig to a Marconi rig. In 1949 the boat, now named Wren, was purchased by Marjorie O&#39;Brien, its present owner, who gave the boat its present name.</p><br>
<p>The boat was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2008. It is normally berthed at a dock at 35 Lydia Island Road, and may be seen sailing in Onset Bay.</p><br>
<p>The Mentone Springs Hotel was a hotel in Mentone, Alabama. It was the last remaining large-scale resort hotel in Alabama from the late 19th century. The hotel burned to the ground after an electrical fire on March 1, 2014.</p><br>
<h2>History</h2><br>
<p>The hotel was built from 1884–87 by J. Frank Caldwell, a physician from Pennsylvania who had vacationed in the area. On the property are two springs, Mineral Springs and Beauty Springs. The hotel and town were named after the French resort town of Menton. The area gained in popularity among tourists in the 1890s, due largely to the cooler temperatures and scenery of the Ridge-and-Valley Appalachians. In 1915 the hotel was renovated and an annex built, adding 27 rooms. Through the Great Depression to the 1970s, the hotel went into decline, saddled with debt and bouncing between owners. It ceased operating in 1950 and was later converted to a private residence and organ repair shop. The hotel reopened in 2001, and underwent an extensive restoration in 2010–11. An antique store occupied the 1915 annex.</p><br>
<p>The Robert L. Dulaney House is a historic house located at 602 North 7th Street in Marshall, Illinois.</p><br>
<h2>Description and history</h2><br>
<p>The house was built circa 1864 for Robert L. Dulaney, a local lawyer and banker, and his family. The house has an Italianate design and is one of ten homes in Marshall designed in the style. The walls of the house were built with brick, while its foundation is limestone. The houses third-floor windows, as well as the second-floor window above the entrance, are arched and feature cast iron hoods, a unique feature among Marshalls homes. The steep cross gabled roof has wide overhanging eaves, which are decorated with brackets. In the 1890s, the house was remodeled to add Queen Anne and Classical Revival elements, such as its windows and front porch respectively.</p><br>
<p>The house was added to the National Register of Historic Places on May 2, 1997.</p><br>
<p>The Wells Fargo and Company Express Building was built circa 1877 in Silver Reef, Utah. It is one of three surviving structures in Silver Reef, which is now a ghost town. The building housed the offices of the Wells Fargo Company. The structure was built by local masons George Brooks and Ira McMullin of local red sandstone, with finished ashlar masonry by Brooks in the front and coursed rubble stone by McMullin on the other three sides. A parapet surrounds the single-slope roof on the front and sides. The main level is divided into two equal-sized rooms, each with two front entrances and a rear entrance, with a vault on one side. The basement does not connect to the upper levels. It was used as a stable. The Wells Fargo building was used as a mine supply store in the late 19th century, then for a time as the residence of the Colbath family. Its last use was as offices for the Western Gold and Uranium Company, who added a rear porch structure. The building is owned by Washington County.</p><br>
<p>The building was placed on the National Register of Historic Places on March 11, 1971.</p><br>
<p>The Locust Grove/R.E. Luttrell Farmstead is a historic farmstead at 24 Bunree Lane in Amissville, Virginia. The main house of the 19 acre farm is an I-house plan timber frame structure built c. 1815. It was extended in the 19th century with a two story addition to the side, and again in 1960 with a modern two story addition to the rear. The core of the house has retained much of its interior decoration and woodwork. The farmstead includes a number of outbuildings, including a tenant house dating to the turn of the 20th century, and c. 1920 stallion barn, chicken house, and meat house. A c. 1830s barn collapsed due to a heavy snow load in 2011. The original owner of the farmstead is not known; its longest tenure of ownership was by the interrelated Corbin, Bywaters, Nelson, Luttrell, and Amiss families.</p><br>
<p>The property was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2013.</p><br>
<p>The Rolfe Barn is a historic barn at 16 Penacook Street in the Penacook village of Concord, New Hampshire. Built c. 1790, the timber frame barn is probably the best-preserved barn of the period in the state. It is also distinctive for its construction methods and materials, which are also rarely seen to survive in New Hampshire. The building&#39;s frame is made of oversized timbers, which were hand-hewn and then smoothed with an adze, a rare step not usually taken for barn construction. The building was framed as two separate three-bay English-style barns joined by bay in the center, giving the frame seven bays in all. The interior layout of the barn matches this construction: the central area has two threshing bays, and there are hay lofts on the outer ends.</p><br>
<p>The barn sits in a property that also includes a 1770s house that was moved to the site c. 1888, a wagon shed from the turn of the 20th century, and a 1998 house that is occupied by the property&#39;s caretakers. When the barn was sold with the intent of moving it in the 1990s, the Penacook Historical Society raised funds to acquire the entire property, and now uses it as its headquarters.</p><br>
<p>The property was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2007.</p><br>
<p>Rowells Covered Bridge is a covered bridge in West Hopkinton, New Hampshire, which carries Rowell Bridge Road over the Contoocook River. The Long truss bridge was completed in 1853, and was the third bridge on the site. The bridge is just under 20 ft wide and 167 ft long, and consists of a single span supported by two modified Long trusses resting on granite abutments. The trusses are distinctive in the addition of several arches, which consist of solid timbers that were spliced or butted together, and mortised into other truss members. The bridges sturdy engineering was demonstrated by the addition of a central pier in the 20th century whose intent was to add strength. The pier, however, acted as a fulcrum, causing the bridge to seesaw under load and weakening its joints. The top of this pier was consequently removed, leaving the bridge largely as designed except for the addition of some metal reinforcing tie rods.</p><br>
<p>The bridge was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1976.</p><br>
<p>The Codding Farm is a historic farmstead at 217 High Street in North Attleborough, Massachusetts. The farmstead consists of three buildings on just under 4 acre of land. The main house was built c. 1833, and its main block is a 1.5 story center-chimney Cape style structure. The side gable roof is pierced by two gable dormers, and the centered front entry is flanked by full-length sidelight windows and surrounded by wide, flat panels. There are single story ells built both left and right of the main house, whose front is set back from that of the main house and whose back wall is flush with that of the main house. One of these ells, both of which served in the 19th century as kitchens, may have been original, but there is evidence that the second is a later 19th century addition. The left addition has a further, smaller ell which was added in the 20th century, and the right wing has a utility shed addition that resembles the one on the left.</p><br>
<p>The outbuildings of the property are a c. 1940 garage/utility shed, and a c. 1918 barn. These two buildings lie just east of the main house. The shed is a wood frame structure about 22 ft square, with an asymmetrical gable roof to accommodate a pair of high openings on the south facade. The barn was built to serve the farm&#39;s dairying operations, and its design is sophisticated for the period of construction. It is built into a slope, allowing for ground-level access to the basement area, where manure is handled, as well as to the main level.</p><br>
<p>The farmstead was owned for 150 years by a single family. The farmstead was built by Jonathan Richards, probably not long after his marriage c. 1832-3. In 1850 the farm was purchased by Abiel Codding, Jr., a jeweler, probably for his father to work. During the Codding&#39;s ownership the house may have been converted for use by two families, as evidenced by the addition of the second kitchen ell. After Abiel Codding, Sr., died in 1881, his son leased the farm to tenant farmers. For much of the 20th century the tenants were members of the Titus family, even as the land changed hands among the generations of Coddings. In 2000 the town purchased the property in order to save it from planned development. Portions of the farm have been set aside for recreational purposes, and the buildings have been rehabilitated.</p><br>
<p>The property was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2009.</p><br>
<p>Fort Boykin is a historic site in Isle of Wight County, Virginia, located along the James River. The history of the site is believed to date back to 1623 when colonists were ordered to build a fort to protect them from attacking Native Americans or Spanish marauders. The original fort, called The Castle or The Fort at Warroskoyack, would have had a triangular shape and been surrounded by a ditch. The earthworks would have been topped by palisade walls. As those threats became less of a concern, the fort was eventually abandoned.</p><br>
<p>During Bacon&#39;s Rebellion in 1677, Fort Boykin was active according to the journal of the ship Young Prince.</p><br>
<p>During the American Revolution, the area where The Castle was located was refortified. The new fort was named Fort Francis Boykin in honor of a local officer in the Continental Army, who was then the owner of the site. It was also known as the Fort at the Rocks, the Rocks being the name of the adjacent plantation. What little was left of The Castle was enlarged upon with new ramparts and gun emplacements added. Military records list no engagements with the enemy either at the fort or in its vicinity and after the British surrender in 1781, the fort was yet again abandoned.</p><br>
<p>The fort is believed to have been reworked again during the War of 1812 when it was enlarged to the shape of a five-pointed star. Although the records do not reveal any direct engagements with the fort, it is known that the British ship HMS Plantagenet lay offshore in the river for several months. During that time, the British attempted to land at the wharf of The Rocks plantation, only to be beaten back by the men stationed at the fort. After the war was over, the fort was left to the elements.</p><br>
<p>The American Civil War brought a renewed interest in the fort by the Confederate army, and the size was doubled from that of its previous incarnation.</p><br>
<p>Between June 1861 and May 1862, the Confederate Army cleared, refurbished and refortified Fort Boykin as one in a series of earthworks design to prevent invasion by the Union, whose buildup at the mouth of the James River posed a severe threat to Richmond. Commander of the Virginia forces Robert E. Lee ordered Col. Andrew Talcott, State Engineer of Virginia, to redesign Fort Boykin. Similar defensive works were also in place such as Fort Huger, Mulberry Island, Jamestown Island and Drewery&#39;s Bluff.</p><br>
<p>In May 1862, the fort was fired upon by a Union Navy fleet consisting of the USS Minnesota, Galena and Susquehanna. Realizing that their guns were no match to the superior Union guns, the soldiers manning the fort retreated. Union soldiers who came ashore a few days later destroyed what they could and blew up the powder magazine. For the remainder of the war, the site was used by the Confederate Signal Corps among whose ranks included poet Sidney Lanier.</p><br>
<p>After the Civil War, the fort was no longer to be used as a military installation and was again left to be overgrown shadow of itself. The property was bought in 1908 and a house was built inside its earthworks. After the last owner died in 1976, the fort was given to the state for public use. Today the fort remains largely intact, but most of the front wall facing the river has eroded away. It is now the property of Isle of Wight County, and is a public park. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1985 for its archaeological potential.</p><br>
<p>The 6th Avenue Hotel - Windsor Hotel, now known as the New Windsor Hotel, is the only 19th century hotel which is still in use in the Phoenix, Arizona, original town-site. It is listed in the National Register of Historic Places.</p><br>
<h2>History</h2><br>
<p>In 1881, Phoenix was incorporated as a city. One of the first of several important events which revolutionized the economy of Phoenix was the establishment of a railroad system in the 1880s. Phoenix thus became the most important trade center in Arizona. In 1888, the city offices were moved into a new City Hall, at Washington Street and Central Avenue and in 1889, the territorial capital was moved from the town of Prescott to Phoenix. When the territorial capital was moved from Prescott to Phoenix in 1889 the temporary territorial offices were also located in City Hall.</p><br>
<p>The need for the establishment of hotels and living quarters was apparent. In 1893, Phoenix pioneer and businessman A.D. Walsh had a hotel built in the corner of what is now known as 6th Avenue and Adams Street and named it the 6th Avenue Hotel. The proper address of the building, which originally was a two-story brick Victorian styled structure, is 546 W. Adams Street.</p><br>
<p>In 1925, the hotel was renamed the Windsor Hotel. In the 1930s the Windsor went through a remodeling process in which a third story was added. The third story brick structure has a stucco facade on the south and west walls. A front brick addition with casement windows mixed the Victorian architecture with a modern facade. In the 1950s, it was finally renamed the "New" Windsor Hotel.</p><br>
<p>No longer used as a hotel, it is now a low cost haven for the elderly poor in downtown Phoenix.</p><br>
<h2>National Register of Historic Places</h2><br>
<p>The Windsor Hotel was added to National Register of Historic Places on September 4, 1985, and its reference number is 85002041. It is listed as the "6th Avenue Hotel-Windsor Hotel" also known as "47-9&#39; According to the NRHP, the period of significance was 1875–1899.</p><br>
<p>The Old Lone Star Brewery complex is located at 200 West Jones Avenue, downtown San Antonio, county of Bexar, in the USA state of Texas. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1972.</p><br>
<h2>History</h2><br>
<p>The design of the complex has been described as "...done up with turrets and battlements the way Mad King Ludwig of Bavaria might have done it, if he had been a St. Louis beer brewer." It was built with funding from San Antonio businessmen John H. Kampmann and Edward Hope, as well as St. Louis businessman Adolphus Busch, who was president of the Lone Star Brewing Company.</p><br>
<p>In 1920 the 18th Amendment to the USA Constitution and the resulting Volstead Act prohibited alcoholic beverages in the country. During this period, the brewery housed the Lone Star Cotton Mills. Prohibition ended in the United States in 1933 when the 21st Amendment to the USA Constitution repealed the 18th Amendment. However, by that time the building had been temporarily abandoned, and the original brewery owners never occupied it again. The Lone Star name was taken over by a new company that opened a plant at 400 Lone Star Boulevard in San Antonio. The complex was occupied by several different businesses for three decades until it was sold to the San Antonio Museum Association in the 1970s. It is currently home to the San Antonio Museum of Art.</p><br>
<h2>Building details</h2><br>
<p>Albert Beckmann and James Wahrenberger were supervising architects for E. Jugenfeld and Company when it designed and oversaw the construction of the brewery. The complex on the original NRHP designation is the 2-story attached central building, with an overhead 4th story bridge joining the east and west wings The attached east wing is a 5-story building, attached to a 4-story building. The attached west wing is more complex, with a 4-story building, attached to a 5-story building with a tower rising from the top of it. Next to that are two 1-story buildings joined in the middle by a 3-story building. There is a 2-story detached office building. To the rear of the main building are detached service buildings and a courtyard for employees and visitors.</p><br>
<p>A National Register of Historic Places boundary increase in 1979 added four structures that had been left off the 1972 designation due to resistance from the owner of the property. When the owner sold the property to the San Antonio Museum Association, the National Register of Historic Places was cleared to add the increase. Included in the increase were the 2-1/2-story boiler and equipment room, the 2-story ice manufacturing plant, the 2-story horse stable and vehicle storage, and the 1-story employee wash house.</p><br>
<p>The John W. Lewis House is a historic house located at 503 Chestnut St. in Marshall, Illinois. The house was built between 1906 and 1908 for John W. Lewis, a politician and early settler of Clark County. Architects Barber & Kluttz designed the -story Classical Revival house. A white two-story verandah marks the front entrance of the house. Two-story Ionic columns support the verandah around the entrance; to either side, the verandah ends at a large circular section supported by one-story columns. A smaller two-story verandah with a similar design surrounds the side entrance. The house&#39;s hipped roof features three dormers and cresting along its peak.</p><br>
<p>The house was added to the National Register of Historic Places on February 26, 1982.</p><br>
<p>The Manly-McCann House is a historic building located at 402 S. 4th St. in Marshall, Illinois. The Greek Revival building was constructed in 1838 to serve as a temporary courthouse for Clark County. While Clark County moved its county seat to Marshall in 1837, a permanent courthouse could not be completed until 1839, so a smaller temporary building became necessary. After the county government relocated, Marshall postmaster Uri Manly moved the citys post office and his store to the building. The building later became a private home and had several owners; one of the longer owners of the house was the McCann family, who owned the house from 1891 to 1947 and constructed several additions on the rear. The Clark County Historical Society bought the house in 1968 and uses it as the countys historical museum.</p><br>
<p>The house was added to the National Register of Historic Places on March 5, 1982.</p><br>
<p>Mort Glosser Amphitheater  is an amphitheatre in Gadsden, Alabama. Built in 1935, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1988.</p><br>
<h2>History</h2><br>
<p>The amphitheater was constructed in 1934–35 by the Works Progress Administration. It was built alongside the Gadsden Municipal Auditorium along the Coosa River. The American Legion, who owned the amphitheater, used it as a USO center during World War II to entertain soldiers stationed at Camp Sibert. Outside of wartime, it hosted boxing matches, concerts, plays, and political rallies, among other events. The City of Gadsden purchased the amphitheater in 1986 and began restoration of the facility.</p><br>
<h2>Architecture</h2><br>
<p>Designed by local architect Paul W. Hofferbert, the amphitheater was constructed using stone quarried from Lookout Mountain. The seating area is a half-hexagon with the stage on the north end. The stage is partially covered by a timber-frame proscenium arch finished with stone. A club room, rectangular with a steeply pitched roof, sits to the northwest of the stage. Entrances to the amphitheater are behind the seating area, with a hexagonal gatehouse, and a lower entrance next to the club room, accessible through a stone-walled courtyard. The amphitheater seats 1600.</p><br>
<p>The Hopfenberg is a wooded hill near Winterstein in the borough of Waltershausen, in the county of Gotha in the German state of Thuringia.</p><br>
<p>With a height of, the Hopfenberg forms the eastern boundary of the Emse valley within the municipality of Winterstein. The hill, which is cleared on its western and northern flanks, was used in the Middle Ages for the cultivation of hops, from which the hill derives its name.</p><br>
<p>The rocky southern face of the Hopfenberg towers over the Sembach valley by about 125 metres. The Kilianstein rock formation in the east of the valley recalls the conversion of local pagans by the missionary, St Kilian. The rock face on the Treppenstein is also impressive; here there used to be a quarry whose rock was used in the construction of forest tracks.</p><br>
<p>Home Hill Powerhouse is a heritage-listed power station at First Avenue, Home Hill, Shire of Burdekin, Queensland, Australia. It was built from to 1922. It is also known as Inkerman Irrigation Area Power House. It was added to the Queensland Heritage Register on 2 August 2004.</p><br>
<h2>History</h2><br>
<p>The Home Hill Powerhouse, a substantial brick and corrugated iron structure located in First Avenue, Home Hill, was completed in 1922 as part of the Inkerman Irrigation Area Scheme. At the time it was the largest powerhouse in North Queensland, supplying power for irrigation purposes to the farmers (mainly sugar cane growers) on the Inkerman Estate until 1953.</p><br>
<p>The Inkerman Repurchased Estate, formerly part of Inkerman Station, was opened for selection on 8 December 1911, principally as sugar-growing land. Easy terms encouraged many people with little or no farming experience to take up blocks, and within a year, many of the 500 families who had settled at Inkerman had exhausted their limited capital and were heavily in debt. One drought convinced them that irrigation was essential, but few could afford to irrigate with individual pumping plants.</p><br>
<p>In January 1913 the Inkerman Farmers and Graziers Association began lobbying the Queensland Government for the provision of a government-subsidised irrigation scheme for their district, modeled on the Murrumbidgee Irrigation Scheme in New South Wales, which utilised a central powerhouse to supply power to irrigation pumps on surrounding farms. In February 1913 the Assistant Engineer of the Water Supply Department, HEA Eklund, visited Ayr to report on the proposal. Eklund determined that there was adequate water beneath most Inkerman farms, and supported the idea of a communal irrigation scheme, which would be the first of its kind in North Queensland. Eklund calculated that a central powerhouse could serve 135 farms of an average size of 50 hectares. Although his initial estimate at £74,000 was rejected as too costly, this was revised in 1915 to £131,000 as more people settled in the area. However, the costs now were spread across more farms, Eklund estimating the cost of power at less than a penny per unit, far cheaper than the Murrumbidgee Irrigation Area, which then was less than a sixth the size of that proposed for Home Hill.</p><br>
<p>In May 1915 Queensland&#39;s first secure Labor government took office. Under the leadership of Premier T. J. Ryan and sponsoring a policy of State capitalism, the new Queensland Labor Government set about acquiring State enterprises. In July 1916 the Inkerman irrigation scheme was approved. The Inkerman Water Supply Board was constituted in February 1917 to manage and repay the capital cost over 28 years, the anticipated life of the plant. Detailed survey work was undertaken and by the end of the year, 100 well sites had been tested, 70 selected, and a contract for the manufacture of reinforced concrete casing let to Hume Brothers of Melbourne, with production commencing in late 1918.</p><br>
<p>The cost of the scheme escalated due to inflation after First World War. Shortages and strikes following the war delayed the construction of the central powerhouse, the cost of which had risen by 150 percent. The cost of well sinking had nearly quadrupled, and the number of transmission lines had doubled. In 1921 a fresh estimate put the cost of the scheme at £392,361.</p><br>
<p>On 15 May 1922 Premier Ted Theodore performed the official opening, although the main turbine was not yet completed. The powerhouse provided electricity to the town of Home Hill (surveyed in 1911 to service the Inkerman Repurchased Estate and developed from ), and to a few Inkerman farmers for irrigation purposes with the rest waiting to be connected. The central powerhouse could not drive all the pumps at once, and to prevent overload, power was provided in rotation, whilst at night there was hardly any load on the system.</p><br>
<p>Under the Irrigation Act of 1922 control passed to the Irrigation and Water Supply Commission, which found many discrepancies between the book values and actual worth of many of the assets. All the dead and abandoned wells were written off, and the value of the powerhouse building halved as it was considered that a less elaborate structure would have served as well. £171, 478 was wiped off the capital assets giving a net worth of £235,000. By mid 1923 nearly £400,000 had been spent yet only a thousand hectares were irrigated. Inevitably, the half-complete scheme lost money. Although wartime conditions had contributed, the Water Supply Department had to share the blame; there had been no proper supervision to control well-sinking costs, and operating costs were high with a large powerhouse running at night just to power lights in Home Hill.</p><br>
<p>1931 was so dry that the powerhouse worked 24 hours per day from March to June. Farmers were rostered to maintain an even demand day and night. The installation of meters at last ensured that water and power were not wasted. For the first time the operation made a profit of nearly £3,000 after paying interest, its first contribution to paying off the capital cost.</p><br>
<p>The Moore Government, which replaced the Labor administration in 1929, sold most of the State Enterprises, and accepted the Inkerman farmers proposal to take over the district&#39;s power supply and irrigation scheme. The first meeting of the Inkerman Irrigation Board was held on 23 June 1932. The Board made farmers responsible for maintaining their own pumps, motors, wells and spear systems from 1 July 1932 and fixed the water rate at £6.</p><br>
<p>Local management of the irrigation scheme increased confidence. The Board met the interest bill on the reduced capital as well as redemption on the loan, besides setting aside £6,000 annually as required under the Water Act for renewals and extensions. By June 1935 it was comfortably in surplus. The supply of power to Home Hill increased year by year, and despite a reduction in charges, remained profitable.</p><br>
<p>During the Second World War the rapid deployment of troops to North Queensland overtaxed the Townsville Power Station and new generating equipment was almost impossible to obtain. As its peak demand was at night, and Home Hills by day, the Inkerman Irrigation Board agreed to supply electricity to Townsville. FA Rocketts and Son completed the Home Hill-Townsville link in July 1944. After technical problems were overcome, the first current was fed to Townsville on 5 August 1944. Home Hills surplus power was insufficient, and an extra diesel plant was installed at Townsville, but the sale of power boosted the Irrigation Boards finances.The State Electricity Commission established a regional electricity board at Townsville in December 1945. A mass meeting of Inkerman Irrigation Board farmers in June 1946 endorsed the Townsville Regional Boards takeover proposal. Under an amendment to the Electric Light and Power Acts passed later that year, the powerhouse was sold as from 1 January 1947 for £105,000, £28,449 less than the outstanding debt to Treasury. After a cash payment for coal and stores and sale of electric motors to farmers, the Irrigation Board paid half the difference and the rest was written off.</p><br>
<p>By 1948, most of the power was flowing from Townsville to Home Hill, over 3 million units per annum, 14 times the flow in the opposite direction. Home Hill Powerhouse continued to operate 16 hours per day until the commissioning of the new Townsville generating station on 11 May 1953. Eight days later the Home Hill Powerhouse, whose whistle had blown every day at 8am, 12 noon, 1 pm and 5 pm, regulating local working hours, for 31 years, was decommissioned.</p><br>
<p>In the mid-1960s rice growing emerged as an important new agricultural pursuit for the Burdekin. In 1969 the former Home Hill Powerhouse was officially opened by the Premier of Queensland, the Hon. Joh Bjelke-Petersen, as the Lower Burdekin Rice Producers Co-operative Association Ltd&#39;s rice mill.</p><br>
<p>Considerable infrastructure for the rice milling process was developed round the former Power House. During this time the shed located on the northern side of the power house was removed and replaced by a single story corrugated iron skillion shed. Some internal partitioning and office walls of concrete block were constructed on the ground floor of the Power House building. The machinery and machinery foundations were removed from the machine shed which is located against the eastern facade of the three storey generator building.</p><br>
<p>More recently the complex has housed agricultural chemicals for the sugar industry.</p><br>
<h2>Description</h2><br>
<p>The former Home Hill Powerhouse is a brick and corrugated iron structure situated on a large block in First Avenue, Home Hill. The surviving original powerhouse structure comprises two main elements: an administration area and the generator house.</p><br>
<p>The administration area is a two-storeyed asymmetrical building constructed of brick on concrete foundations and has wings on both sides of a central round arch doorway. The building has a small frontispiece, which is painted green. The arch doorway is surmounted by a pediment decorated with the date of construction of the building, "A.D.1922" and the name of the present function of the building, "Pivot Service Centre". The doorway opens to an entrance hall and staircase, which leads to the first floor. The staircase is constructed of concrete with an iron handrail.</p><br>
<p>The western wing has narrow brickwork columns dividing the facade into three bays. It supports a verandah on the ground and first floors. The ground floor has been partitioned into three rooms: a laboratory, storeroom and galley kitchen. The interior walls are rendered and are painted white. The first floor has been partitioned into two rooms with a timber-framed wall, which were bare of any fixtures and fittings and have a very simple interior.</p><br>
<p>The ground floor of the eastern wing contains the main administration office of "Pivot Agriculture" and consists of one large room, which has been divided into offices and includes a reception area and front counter.</p><br>
<p>The first floor of the eastern wing consists of one large room, now vacant, but recently used as offices. The interior has been modified with the inclusion of a false ceiling and timber panelling for office partitioning. The original timber windows have been replaced with aluminium windows.</p><br>
<p>The former generator building is reached via a single doorway at the rear of the entrance hallway, with another doorway on the first floor also located at the rear of the entrance hallway. Access to the former generator building was limited to a narrow walkway that leads to the rear of the building. The former generator building is a three-storey structure with a concrete floor covering part of the first floor level. The building contains the remains of the power plant, including steel pipes, fans and fluming.</p><br>
<p>Two large rice storage bins have been constructed at the first floor level. These bins are located on a platform supported by concrete piers. The bins are positioned on the northern side of the three-storey generator building.</p><br>
<p>A newly constructed corrugated iron warehouse abuts the rear of the building. To the west of the powerhouse is a long corrugated iron clad building, possibly associated with the former use of the place as a rice factory.</p><br>
<h2>Heritage listing</h2><br>
<p>Home Hill Powerhouse was listed on the Queensland Heritage Register on 2 August 2004 having satisfied the following criteria.</p><br>

<h2>Building</h2><br>
<p>The museum building dates from the Safavid era. Many changes were made to the building during the Qajar era. The building has been decorated by stuccoed forms, which are the principal architectural feature of the Qajar period. There are many patterns of flowers and vase, which are a distinctive feature of decoration in the Qajar period. This feature is one that distinguishes the Qajar age from the Safavid age, in which flowers were never in vases.</p><br>
<h2>Museum</h2><br>
<p>The museum is open from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. and from 5 to 8 p.m. in the spring and summer. In the autumn and winter, it is open from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. and 4 to 7 p.m.</p><br>
<p>Greenly Island is a 168 ha island located 30 km west-south-west of Point Whidbey, Eyre Peninsula in the Great Australian Bight. The island is uninhabited by humans and provides a haven for marine and terrestrial wildlife. The island and its intertidal zone constitute the Greenly Island Conservation Park. Its adjacent waters are occasionally visited by fishermen targeting yellowtail kingfish.</p><br>
<h2>Nomenclature</h2><br>
<p>Greenly Island was named for Sir Isaac Coffin’s fiancée by the British explorer Matthew Flinders on 16 February 1802.</p><br>
<h2>Environment</h2><br>
<p>Greenly Island is a large granite dome with steep sides plunging vertically into deep water, split by two large crevasses which effectively break the island into three blocks. The top of the island is capped with Drooping Sheoak (Allocasuarina verticillata) and Dryland Tea-tree (Melaleuca lanceolata) woodlands while the lower slopes have either a Coastal Tussock (Poa poiformis var. poiformis) grassland or a Marsh Saltbush (Atriplex paludosa var. cordata) shrubland. The main part of the island rises to the east to a steep peak of 230m.</p><br>
<h2>Wildlife</h2><br>
<p>Greenly Island Conservation Park was constituted by statute in 1972 to protect the island’s delicate ecology and haul out areas for Australian sea lion and New Zealand fur seal. western blue groper and yellowtail kingfish are found in the waters off Greenly Island. The tammar wallaby was introduced to Greenly Island (south) in 1905 to provide food for stranded sailors. Their impact on the vegetation is obvious in the marked difference between the north and south islands. Both northern and southern islands support high density populations of bush rats.</p><br>
<p>Birds recorded on Greenly Island include the Cape Barren goose, white-faced heron, ruddy turnstone, Australian raven, Australian kestrel, white-bellied sea eagle, sooty oystercatcher, welcome swallow, silver gull, Pacific gull, rock parrot, little grassbird, red-capped robin, great cormorant, short-tailed shearwater, crested tern, fairy tern, silvereye and little penguin.</p><br>
<p>Reptiles recorded on Greenly Island include the bull skink (Egernia multiscutata) and four-toed earless skink (Hemiergis peronii), southern four-toed slider (Lerista dorsalis), dwarf skink (Menetia greyii), Mallee snakeeye (Morethia obscura) and marbled gecko (Phyllodactylus marmoratus).</p><br>
<h3>Little penguins</h3><br>
<p>The first fauna study of Greenly Island was conducted in 1948 and described the little penguins as "innumerable". In 2004, the little penguin colony&#39;s population was estimated at 1,500 breeding birds.</p><br>
<p>The Salisbury Academy Building is a historic school building in Salisbury, New Hampshire. The two story wood frame building was built in 1796 to serve as an academy of higher education in the area. The building was acquired by the town in 1806 and moved from Salisbury Heights to its present location at the junction of New Hampshire Route 127 and Old Coach Road . Originally a rectangular structure, its upper floor was extended in 1883 as part of a conversion of the classrooms on that floor into a single meeting space, and now hangs over the east facade, supported by posts. From 1884 to 1965 the building was used primarily by the local Grange. It now houses town offices.</p><br>
<p>The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1975.</p><br>
<p>The Long Plain School is a historic school building at 1203 Main Street in Acushnet, Massachusetts. The two story wood frame building was built in 1875 to a design by New Bedford architect Caleb Hammond. Basically rectangular in plan, the building has a hip roof and a projecting central pavilion that rises to a fully pedimented gable and is topped by a Gothic style turret. Entries to the building are on the sides of this projecting pavilion. The pedment and the roof cornice are studded with brackets, and the tympanum of the pediment has an oculus window. The building was originally four bays wide, but was extended in 1924 to six, and has had other 20th century additions to its rear.</p><br>
<p>When built, the building had two classrooms, and served as an elementary school. The modifications in 1924 expanded it to four classrooms, two on each floor. The school was closed between 1947 and 1950 due to low enrollment numbers, and was taken out of service as a school building in 1972. It has served as the Long Plain Museum since 1975.</p><br>
<p>The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2012.</p><br>
<p>Hazelwood Park is a public park on Clarks Point in New Bedford, Massachusetts. The park occupies a plot of 23 acre on the west side of New Bedfords southern peninsula, between Rodney French Boulevard and Brock Avenue. It overlooks Clark&#39;s Cove which opens into Buzzards Bay. The park was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2010.</p><br>
<p>The parks origins lie in three country estates, which were established in the area during the 19th century. It takes its name from the estate of Joseph Congdon, whose 1839-40 Gothic Revival house stands near the center of the park. Congdon named his estate "Hazelwood", and built an English garden on the then-forested Clarks Point peninsula.</p><br>
<p>The park also has two later houses: the Coffin-Howland House, which may contain portions of Congdon&#39;s carriage house, is fire-damaged and fenced off, and the Howland House, built in 1890, is located near Brock Avenue, and is dominated by its large carriage house and stable.</p><br>
<p>By the late 1890s, development had encroached on the area, and the city of New Bedford was purchasing land for use as public parks. It acquired the Hazelwood property in 1902. It hired Warren Manning, who had previously worked for Frederick Law Olmsted, to plan the park.</p><br>
<p>The Marshall Business Historic District is a historic district located in downtown Marshall, Illinois. The district encompasses the citys historic commercial center and includes 56 buildings and structures, 46 of which are contributing buildings. Marshalls courthouse square is a central feature of the district; the square includes the Italian Renaissance Revival Clark County Courthouse, which was built in 1903. The other buildings in the district, mainly commercial and government buildings, were built from the 1830s to the 1960s; however, most of the buildings were built between 1870 and 1910, Marshall&#39;s largest growth period. The buildings from this era are mostly designed in the Italianate, Romanesque, and Italian Renaissance Revival styles.</p><br>
<p>The district was added to the National Register of Historic Places on May 24, 2013.</p><br>
<p>The Anniston Inn Kitchen is an event center in Anniston, Alabama, and the only remaining portion of the Old Anniston Inn. The inn was built in 1885 as an upscale hotel for the planned company town. The majority of the inn burned on January 2, 1923, leaving only the portion containing the kitchen, childrens dining room, and servants living quarters.</p><br>
<p>The kitchen annex matches the original inn&#39;s Queen Anne style. The building is two-and-a-half stories tall, with dormer windows protruding from the half-story attic. A portion of the original veranda sits along the southeast part of the exterior. The west end is occupied by the main dining hall with 17-foot (5-meter) ceilings and exposed purlins and beams.</p><br>
<p>The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1973.</p><br>

<p>The Clarksburg Schoolhouse is a historic school building located on Clarksburg Road in Clarksburg, Illinois. The school opened circa 1892 and was originally known as Bethel School; it changed its name following the growth of Clarksburg in the ensuing years. The school served as Clarksburgs public primary school for children in the first through eighth grades; students from the school continued their education at Shelbyvilles high school. After the school merged into Shelbyville&#39;s district in the 1960s, the building became a community center for Clarksburg Township; it served in this capacity until 1998. The building is the only surviving community schoolhouse in the area.</p><br>
<p>The schoolhouse was added to the National Register of Historic Places on January 25, 2001.</p><br>

<p>The Horace M. Tallman House is a historic house located at 816 W. Main St. in Shelbyville, Illinois. Horace M. Tallman built the Queen Anne house for his family in 1905. Tallman was a farmer and farm implement salesman, and he became the owner of the Ann Arbor Machine Company in 1920. In 1928-29, Tallman invented the pickup hay baler, which automated the process of baling and collecting hay. While Tallman died in 1929, his sons developed and marketed the baler, which became a labor-saving machine which permanently changed farming practices. Tallman&#39;s house is the only surviving building connected to Tallman and the invention of the pickup hay baler.</p><br>
<p>The house was added to the National Register of Historic Places on May 6, 1988.</p><br>

<p>Since its establishment in 1924, the Whampoa Military Academy had already set up its political work system. In April 1950, the academy reformed the political work system by changing the Political Staff Bureau to Political Department. In May 1951, it was renamed General Political Department and in August 1963 as General Political Warfare Department with some modifications to its structural agencies. On 1 March 2002, the Organizational Ordinance of the General Political Warfare Bureau was put into performance.</p><br>

<p>The Shelbyville Historic District is a historic district encompassing the core of Shelbyville, Illinois. The district includes 398 buildings, 293 of which are contributing buildings. The section of Shelbyville laid out at the citys founding in 1827 forms the center of the district. Shelbyvilles public square, which includes the 1880 Shelby County Courthouse and a veterans memorial, is the central feature of this part of the historic district. The original section of Shelbyville also includes significant commercial and government buildings. The district also includes Shelbyvilles oldest residential areas, which developed out from the 1827 core. The Italianate style is the most prominent architectural style in the district, both in homes and commercial buildings; other common architectural styles include Greek Revival, Gothic Revival, Second Empire, and Queen Anne.</p><br>
<p>The district was added to the National Register of Historic Places on December 22, 1976.</p><br>
<p>Bocage Plantation is a historic plantation in Darrow, Ascension Parish, Louisiana, about 25 miles southeast of Baton Rouge. The plantation house was constructed in 1837 in Greek Revival style with Creole influences, especially in the floorplan. Established in 1801, the plantation was added to the National Register of Historic Places on June 20, 1991.</p><br>
<h2>History</h2><br>
<p>Bocage Plantation was established in January 1801, 5 years after Étienne de Boré proved that sugarcane cultivation could be profitable in southern Louisiana and 2 years before the Louisiana Purchase. It was a wedding gift from St. James Parish planter Marius Pons Bringier to his eldest daughter, 14-year-old Francoise "Fanny" Bringier, on the occasion of her marriage to 34-year-old Parisian bon vivant Christophe Colomb.</p><br>
<p>The original house, built in 1801 and destroyed by fire in or before 1837, was a "raised Creole house—brick on the first floor supporting a heavy-timber frame above". At first, it was thought that this house was at the same site as, and the basis for, the current house, until, "during the process, the bases of four symmetrically placed chimneys surrounded by charred remains and fragments of brick and broken glass, were discovered buried about 40 feet behind the house."</p><br>
<p>Although sources vary as to the certainty of it, the design of the current, 1837, house has been attributed to James H. Dakin, who came to Louisiana in 1835, was employed by the Bringier family, and was skilled in Greek Revival architecture. Distinctive features of the façade include the massive entablature, with pediment design on the parapet and denticulated cornice, supported across the entire front by square, giant order columns forming a double gallery. The front staircase is not original; it was added during the 2008 restoration based on the oldest know picture/watercolor painting of Bocage done at the beginning of the 20th century over 100 years prior to the new staircase being added. The upper gallery was used to film a scene in the movie "Twelve Years a Slave". The upper gallery opens into a large double parlor on the premier étage, where rooms open into each other, without halls, in the Creole style, with a cabinet-loggia at the rear. Giant twelve-feet-tall sliding doors separate the upper parlors when closed. The roof once served as a rainwater catch basin, with the fresh water shunted through pipes to a cistern on each side, in back of the house.</p><br>
<p>After many years of neglect, the house was salvaged and restored in 1941 by Drs. E. G. Kohlsdorf and Anita Crozat (Mrs. Kohlsdorf). An auction in 2007 sold various furnishings from the house and grounds. In 2008 the house&mdash; was further restored using up to date engineering principles and all known history by its new owner, Dr. Marion Rundell&mdash;became a B&B which also offered public tours. The plantation was is severe disrepair in 2007 and the 2008 restoration was done to save the mansion from complete ruin.</p><br>
<h2>Geography</h2><br>
<p>Bocage Plantation is located on Louisiana Highway 942, along the River Road, in Darrow, Ascension Parish, on the east bank of the Mississippi River, but on a meander that puts it north and west of the river. The plantation is across the river from the parish seat of Donaldsonville, and about 25 miles southeast of Baton Rouge.</p><br>

<p>Bocage Plantation was used as a setting for "Shaw Farm" in the 2013 film 12 Years a Slave.</p><br>
<p>The Stanley Tavern is a historic tavern building at 371 Main Street in Hopkinton, New Hampshire. The oldest portion of this Georgian wood frame structure was built c. 1791 by Theophilus Stanley, to serve as a tavern in the town, which was at the time vying  with Concord to be the state capital. It is the only surviving tavern of three that were known to be present in the town in the late 18th and early 19th century. The building originally consisted of a typical five bay wide, two bay deep, Georgian house with a central chimney, to which a single story kitchen wing with rear chimney was built on. Around 1800 the roof of the kitchen wing was raised to a full two stories. A two story wing added in 1875 was demolished during restoration of the property in the early 2000s. The building served as a tavern until 1864, and has since gone through a variety of commercial and residential uses. The property distinctively includes a shed that is as old as the main house.</p><br>
<p>The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2005.</p><br>
<p>The Sulphite Railroad Bridge, also known locally as the Upside-Down Covered Bridge is a historic railroad bridge in Franklin, New Hampshire. The bridge was built c. 1896-7 to carry the tracks of the Boston and Maine Railroad across the Winnipesaukee River between Franklin and Tilton. It is located about 0.7 mi east of Franklin, and about 350 yd south of US Route 3, and crosses the river at a point where its banks are quite steep; it is not readily visible from any roadway, but may be seen from the Winnipesaukee River Trail. The bridge is 234 ft long, and consists of three spans, each supported by Pratt trusses resting on granite piers or abutments. The main central span measures 180 ft. The bridge is believed to be the only surviving "upside down" covered railroad bridge, in which the rail bed is laid on top of the bridge roof, whose purpose is to shelter the trusses below. The railroad line was shut down in 1973.</p><br>
<p>The bridge was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1975. The bridge is not in good condition, having been subjected to graffiti, vandalism, and arson, as well as the elements.</p><br>
<p>The Suncook Village Commercial–Civic Historic District encompasses the civic and commercial heart of Suncook, New Hampshire, a village on the Suncook River in Pembroke and Allenstown. The civic district is a 3 acre area on the Pembroke side of the river, adjacent to the Pembroke Mill, a site that had seen industrial use since the 18th century. The district includes 21 commercial buildings, 19 of which are historically significant. The district was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2005.</p><br>
<p>The Suncook area was settled in the late 1730s, and small-scale industrial works along the river were an early feature, with a sawmill and gristmill being followed by a fulling mill in the 1700s. The area did not begin to grow substantially until the 1830s, when the first textile mills began to be built there in 1814, although it did benefit from the presence first of ferry services and then bridges, placing the nascent village on major travel routes. Declining agricultural income and rising factory income led to the growth of the commercial center adjacent to the mill complexes that lined the river. In the 1850s the arrival of railroads spurred further growth. By the 1860s Main Street and Glass Street were lined with wood frame commercial buildings.</p><br>
<p>Fires in this area in the 1870s resulted in significant changes to the village. One fire in 1876 destroyed much of Main Street&#39;s west side, while a second destroyed much of the east side two years later. The town of Pembroke widened the street, and a significant number of brick buildings were built along Main Street. Many of the buildings in the district were built in the wake of these fires, and exhibit some Italian and Renaissance Revival styling that was popular at that time. The most architecturally interesting is the Clock Tower building at 116 Main Street, which occupies a prominent place overlooking the river, and whose four-story clock tower is the tallest structure in the village.</p><br>
